St. Moritz above its frozen lake, the Engadin peaks under snow behind the town

Destinations · Engadin · Switzerland

St. Moritz, by private jet.

Engadin Airport in Samedan is a few minutes from St. Moritz and one of the highest airports in Europe, at about 5,600 feet. It is private and general aviation only — no airlines — and its approach is restricted to crews who have completed the airport's familiarization.

The airports

LSZS

Engadin Airport, Samedan

Runway of about 1,800 m at roughly 1,707 m elevation. Mandatory crew familiarization; no runway lighting, so arrivals are planned for daylight.

LSZH

Zurich

The long-runway alternate when weather or crew qualification rules out Samedan, followed by road or helicopter.

The aircraft that fits.

The runway length allows large-cabin jets into Samedan, but the deciding factor is the crew: the operator must have pilots qualified for the field. That narrows the list of operators before it narrows the aircraft.

When to brief early.

The winter season around Christmas, New Year, and the February events brings the heaviest traffic. Short daylight hours in December tighten the arrival window further.
