Choosing an aircraft for a transatlantic charter.

A transatlantic charter should be evaluated as a planning exercise, not a comparison of brochures. Before confirming an aircraft type, the gatekeeper should require an analysis that connects route, payload, wind, reserves, alternates, crew, permits, airports, and real availability.

Operational questions

  • Can the aircraft fly the leg with the requested payload under reasonable assumptions?
  • Which alternate and reserves will be used?
  • What authority applies to the operator and the aircraft?
  • How much experience does the crew have on this route and in oceanic operation?
  • Are permits, slots, or specific handling required?
  • Which alternate airports cover the destination and a possible diversion?
  • What happens if the tail number changes?

On IFR flights, fuel rules require accounting for the destination, an alternate where applicable, and a reserve afterward; for Part 135, §135.223 sets specific alternate and reserve requirements.

Oceanic operation can add navigation and communication requirements, equal-time-point planning, and contingency procedures. The FAA's Part 91 application guidance for oceanic or remote flights calls for a master flight planning document and an ETP analysis covering engine-out, depressurization, and medical diversion scenarios.

Beyond range

The aircraft has to be able to take off and land under the expected weight, temperature, altitude, and runway conditions. A destination that can technically receive a heavy jet might carry slot, handling, schedule, or permit restrictions that make a different airport more practical. The availability of the specific aircraft matters too — a model family isn't the same thing as an available tail number.

Cabin experience matters, but it should be expressed operationally: rest, configuration, privacy, baggage, and expected duration. Avoid recommending an ultra-long-range aircraft out of habit if a heavy meets the mission, or a heavy if payload and alternates leave a narrow margin.
